Student and Staff Diversity
The School District of Beloit understands the importance of supporting diversity initiatives in and out of the classroom, and we make it a priority in our recruitment and retention of staff.
With just over 5,200 students, 36.5% of our students identify as Hispanic; 30.2% as Caucasian; 21.8% as African American; and 11.5% identify as Asian, American Indian, Pacific Islander, or two or more races. Of the 840 staff members in our District, 27.5% of our staff represent a minority race/ethnicity to provide students with cultural role models and experiences.
The Grow Your Own Multicultural Teacher Scholarship Program provides scholarships to minority students pursuing a career in education. Once their education is completed, our hope is that they will return to Beloit and our School District to begin their career.
The Grow Your Own Multicultural Teacher Scholarship Program not only helps our students but the community as well. Diversity helps our students to be more globally competitive. The School District of Beloit staff support and fund this scholarship program through an automatic payment deduction.

High School College and Career Academies
The School District of Beloit is proud to be the only District in Rock County offering a Career Academy program since the start of the 2018-2019 school year. This program is one of the many advantages of attending Beloit Memorial High School.
A College and Career Academy is a personalized small learning community within Beloit Memorial High School, involving a cohort of students and a team of committed teachers for a two through four year span.
Academies provide real-world experiences with local businesses and professionals, linking schoolwork and the workplace. Academies provide students the advanced skills they need to be successful, productive citizens in college, career and life by providing engaging, hands-on, relevant learning opportunities, developing small learning communities, and connecting with local businesses, post-secondary institutions, and community organizations.
All freshman are part of the Freshman Academy in which they are able to start exploring Career Academies through entry-level career and technical education courses and exposure to Beloit Memorial High School Career Academies.
Mid-way through freshman year, students will be asked to select a career pathway to explore during their Sophomore through Senior years and become part of an Academy. This decision is collaborative involving the student, counselors, teachers, and administration.
Beloit Memorial offers four College and Career Academies and a Collegiate Academy

The Alonzo Family
As a parent you want the best education possible for your children. You send them to school to learn, but as they grow you watch them make friends, join clubs, play instruments or sports - the things that are important to them. While you're watching all this unfold, something amazing happens...a teacher (or two) impacts your children in a way that leaves a lasting impression on them. A teacher that pushes them to their boundaries, that forces them to think outside the box, or better yet to think for themselves. Teachers that invest in them, believe in them even when they don't believe in themselves. Teachers that make learning fun! We are truly grateful to them for showing our children the value of their education and open their eyes to a wonderful world of knowledge. Our girls (now 6th and 8th graders at Aldrich) will take these "treasured" moments with them into their adult life. Who knows, maybe one day they will impact someone's life like a teacher did for them.

The Everson-Pearson Family
We are proud parents of two kiddos at SDB. Both of our children are enrolled in the DLI program (Dual Language Immersion) of which half of their day is learning in English and the other half in Spanish. Best decision we have made for our children’s future, hands down! Our time in SDB started at Hackett Elementary eight years ago. We dread the day that we no longer have a child there. Mr. McReynolds and his staff have a one-of-a kind team that works together on all levels. This school is as diverse as it gets and comes with many challenges of which Hackett has risen from. They are a 4-star school! Going from a place so familiar, Hackett, to a whole new experience at Cunningham, was a challenge for us all. A challenge to build new relationships; learn new styles of communication; and get involved on a whole new level. If you don’t know what is going on, it is your responsibility to find out. We have built many new bonds and have been openly welcomed to the Cunningham Family. I may drive them crazy with all my questions and outside of school hours messages to Ms. Paepke. Our advice to SDB parents is to get involved in your schools on whatever level you can. Build relationships, ask questions, offer comments, and show up. We have never been turned away by any staff member at any school. The District is full of teachers and staff that love our children as much as we do and want to help them grow into the best they can be. It takes a village to raise a child. This is our job as parents to do the best we can for our children and demand the best for our children. Support your kids, support your teachers, and support your schools. Make school a priority for your child and YOU!

Rye'ayzah shared that "One reason I like Robinson School is Ms. Pebbles because she cooks the best food. Another reason I like school is because my friends are really kind to me and they are the best friends. I really love my teachers.” Rye'onnah remembering back on her days at Robinson shared that what she liked most about Robinson, “is my friends and my teachers. What I like about my friends is that they are so nice, they have a very kind heart, and they are nice to other people. What I like about my teachers is they help me out when I'm upset, and they are nice. They care about me and I love them. They have a very sweet and kind heart. I love my friends and teachers." Ms. Lomax says "Robinson School and the School District of Beloit have been there for my family for many times. They have helped us in many ways I thought would never be possible. Mrs. McCarthy and Mrs. Nehr have been there for the girls and our family through some very hard times. We truly appreciate them for taking the time and caring so much about our well-being. These are very trying, and troubling times and it really feels good to know that someone out there is listening and always caring for us in our time of need. We have always been able to talk to someone. Even when school was out, they were there. My experience with Robinson School and the School District of Beloit has been phenomenal to my family."
Amo a mis amigos y maestros."

The Martínez-Giles Family
Hello, we are the Martínez-Giles family. First of all, we are very proud of our two children and grateful for the great support we have received from the School District of Beloit. Since we enrolled at Even Start we received great support from the principal, as well as the teachers. Later, our children began elementary school at Hackett where they had the opportunity to enroll in the Bilingual program to learn more about our Latin language and participate in different programs offered by the school. Our son was especially happy to stay after class to help out his classmates and teachers. Now both of our children are at Cunningham, and we continue to be grateful for the great support we receive from their teachers, especially in these moments that they are in distance learning. As parents, we are very happy and even more proud of our children because they continue to have the best grades despite studying online. Thank you, School District of Beloit.

The Ruffini Family
Our family is proud to support and be involved with the School District of Beloit. We moved to Beloit in 2015 and immediately jumped into everything we could to immerse ourselves in the community. We appreciate the variety of experiences and adventures that the district has for their students. When our son, Roman, was old enough to attend 4K, we looked no further than the School District of Beloit for the right track to ensure our son would learn in a culturally diverse, highly motivated, and thought-provoking environment. The teachers and leaders at Todd Elementary were the ideal fit for us as a family. Starting day one, the dual language immersion program has broadened his horizon and pushes him to learn beyond his wildest imagination.
Roman loves the social aspects of being around such a supportive group of friends and we really enjoy getting to interact with the other families at Todd. Beloit is a great home for us, and we encourage everyone to join us in making the most out of what our schools have to offer.

The Vasquez Family
Latasha shared,“We love that Beloit Learning Academy (BLA) is a part of the district, and that Isaac was able to attend.” I agree with my Mom said Isaac, “I have attended BLA for five years. Everyone at the school has been very supportive. Before coming to BLA, I went through some very dark years. I felt like somewhat of an outcast most of the time. That changed when I started attending school at BLA. Everyone has always supported me, and I have made friends and formed positive relationships with the students and staff. I have improved in many ways, and I still have to work on myself, but at BLA I feel that I will get the help and support I need.” Latasha said “BLA is a big support for Isaac and all the other students. We wouldn't be where we are now if it weren't for BLA.

Portrait of a Graduate
-
The process of creating and implementing a Portrait of a Graduate was a community effort. We brought together students, families, staff, teachers, community advocates and leaders, business and civic leaders, non-profits, and school administrators to create a North Star for our students and our community. That North Star is our Portrait of a Graduate. This Portrait will ensure that we continue to provide a strategic, engaging, and collaborative educational experience and learning environment for each and every student in our District.
It was months of work, including meetings that sought out input, ideas, thoughts, and visions; lots of opportunities for feedback through surveys and conversations; and finally, the selection of the design and words that best reflect our students and their future. Those words and attributes are Fearless Learner, Ambitious Innovator, Global Contributor, Resilient Leader, Critical Thinker, and Effective Communicator.
The Beloit Memorial High School Academies create an environment of learning and growth that prepares and inspires each student to succeed in life and contribute to an ever-changing world. Beloit Memorial High School Graduates are Career, College, and Community Ready thanks to our Academies, Community Partnerships, and our Portrait of a Graduate.

"This was a great opportunity for me to join community stakeholders in developing new and innovative ways to connect and engage students in our school district. It's been exciting to be a part of a team that is rolling up their sleeves to ensure that every child has the tools they need to get an excellent education and a bright future. The Portrait of a Graduate will enhance our school district and positvely impact the community. This document is an educational roadmap we can follow which will help our students throughout their educational journey as they reach their destination of success."
Ms. Regina Dunkin, City of Beloit Council Member, Community Leader and Advocate"I enjoyed the opportunity to not only share my experiences having been a graduate of the School District of Beloit, but also collaborating not only with community partners, but also educators in helping shape the path for the future. I believe the Portrait of a Graduate will be a great resource for the community, as it sets the foundational outline for the future graduates of the School District of Beloit."
Mr. Mark Rand, Chief Executive Officer, Stateline Boys and Girls Club"Strong school districts and schools add significantly to a community's ability to sustain an able and ready workforce and a future workforce pipeline. To create long-lasting and stable economic growth in our region, we must continue to collaborate and engage with our school district and students. I value the work that is being done at the School District of Beloit and the development of a Portrait of a Graduate." Ms. Jen Hall, President and CEO, Greater Beloit Economic Development Corporation
"The opportunity to participate and engage in a community-wide project that will benefit all students in the School District of Beloit and our community at-large was very inspiring. I appreciated being a part of a committee that included community and business leaders, staff and students from the high school, and representatives of the city of Beloit. The Portrait of a Graduate is a vision for today and the future, and it ensures all graduates have the skills necessary to thrive in life and in their chosen path." Ms. Tara Dunn, Public Housing Coordinator, City of Beloit
"I had a great experience participating in the Portrait of a Graduate. The District was steadfast in the process and inclusive with the community make-up and participation. This document is so important in moving the District forward. By involving the business community in this process, it allows for a continued and engaging partnership with the School District of Beloit to develop a talent pipeline in the greater Beloit area that starts with our students!" Michelle Hendrix-Nora | McNeel Principal
Celebrating 15 years with the District, Ms. Hendrix-Nora is a District and Community Leader. This past year she was recognized by YWCA of Rock County with the Racial Justice Award. Ms. Hendrix-Nora shared that “being an educator in Beloit is awesome, especially at the HOME of the Lancers! I have the opportunity to mold, mentor, and motivate young people in my hometown in order to reach their dreams and aspirations. I work with fellow educators who care dearly about our students and will move mountains to support them. My position allows me to be a voice for underrepresented students, staff, and families. Overall, I love that I have the opportunity to change the narrative for my Beloit students with a smile.”
Continuing with her comments, Ms. Hendrix-Nora described McNeel students as “kind, loving, fun, caring, and not afraid to take risks and make mistakes to learn. My fourth graders bring me birthday cookies and I can sing songs in the lunchroom with the eighth graders. Each Lancer is unique, and I appreciate their individuality, culture, and style. We are able to reflect together on our choices and restore relationships. As a previous Lancer, it is good to know that we have a bond: Once a Lancer, Always a Lancer.”

Our students come to school each and every day wanting to grow as their own unique individual self and learn as a student. I love that our students are problem-solvers and want to help wherever they can within the school."
"Our students at McNeel embrace diversity and it is an honor to support and help develop the future generation, and as always GO LANCERS!!”

Kati McQueen | BMHS Math Teacher
"I am enjoying my tenth year with the School District of Beloit as a Math Teacher, and as the Co-Chair of the Math Department at Beloit Memorial High School.
My decision to work for the School District of Beloit was a no-brainer! As a former student of Converse, McNeel, and BMHS, I always knew that I wanted to return home to the District that molded me. Even after 10 years at BMHS, I am still constantly amazed by our students. Working with such a diverse group of young people, I am exposed to a variety of cultures, interests, and talents. I am fascinated by the experiences, passions, and expertise of our students, and learn something from them every day! As the Faculty Advisor for the student-led Key Club, I experience first-hand the philanthropic and caring spirit of our students. Together, they lead and stand for what’s right through service and volunteerism."

Carl Newton | 1st Grade Teacher
“Being from Beloit and returning to teach after serving in the military gave me purpose. The most enjoyable thing about my job is seeing the smiles on the faces of each student and athlete that I have had the pleasure of teaching and or coaching. The greatness that I see in all of them, gives me a chance to mentor, create a loving environment for them, and empower their minds for more success. I am in my fifth year at the School District of Beloit and my third year of teaching. Merrill Elementary is a nurturing school; enriched with greatness in the staff, students, and community. Everyone who enters our building (staff, families, students, community members) are greeted with admiration and respect, no matter your background.”

There are many things Kari loves about working in the School District of Beloit, but the families in our District are who she really enjoys the most. “The families that we serve are what I love most about working within the School District of Beloit. The multi-generational connections and tradition of attending our schools runs deep within the community. The shared sense of responsibility to provide our students with the best educational experience to better our students and in turn better our community is steeped in a deep commitment to the City of Beloit.” We could not have said it better, Kari. Our students and families benefit from the work you are doing.
