The School District of Beloit literacy curricula are highly rated and aligned to Wisconsin state English Language Arts standards. Our vision for literacy learning builds strong reading foundational skills and grade level understandings for all students through culturally relevant and responsive instructional practices, strategies and resources to meet each learner's language and literacy needs. Through rigorous and engaging instruction in the domains of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking, we will develop students' language abilities so that they can analyze, interpret, summarize, and synthesize information from multiple sources and perspectives to make meaning of the complex world around them. By nurturing strong home, school and community literacy partnerships, the School District of Beloit’s literacy programs will nurture the joy of reading and a strong, lifelong literacy identity within each learner so that they may excel in their pursuit of college, career and community opportunities.
5th Grade Literacy & Language Arts Units

Unit 1 - Launching the Literacy Lab
This unit creates a culture for reading and writing in the classroom. It establishes routines for reading and writing time with a focus on making logical inferences, vocabulary development (context clues), and the writing process.

Unit 2 - Informational Research Lab on Ecosystems
This informational unit promotes inquiry and research as students gather information while reading about a self-selected ecosystem. While reading, students also practice determining central ideas and supporting details. Students use what they have learned about their ecosystem to create an informative text.

Unit 3 - Argument Research Lab/Space
This unit promotes inquiry and research as students gather information while reading and constructing evidence-based opinions about a self-selected space object. While reading, students also practice identifying evidence that will support their claims. Students use what they have learned about their space object to create an argumentative essay.

Unit 4 - Genre Study/Adventure Literature
This unit has students engage in stories of adventure, both fiction and nonfiction. While reading, students will practice determining themes of the adventure texts. They will compare the identified themes through the use of essay writing. Students will also engage in the writing process to create their own adventure narrative.
