School District of Beloit Staff Recognized: Education is the Focus of Black History Month Celebration in Beloit
During the celebration, Ubuntu Awards were presented to teachers and education support staff in the Beloit area. Ubuntu is an ancient African word which to some means unity. Another translation is “I am what I am because of what we all are."
Part of Amare Hereford’s magic on a basketball court lies in his ability to quietly dominate a game for Beloit Memorial. Take Friday night’s encounter with Southern Lakes Conference foe Lake Geneva Badger, for example.
The first is Comedy Knight, a stand-up comedy show hosted at Bagels and More, 324 State St, on Friday, Feb. 16 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. The second fundraiser is a Friendly Feud event, a play on the classic game show “Family Feud.” The competition event takes place on Friday, Feb. 23 from 7-9 p.m. at the Beloit Memorial Auditorium, 1225 Fourth Street.
During a public listening session on Tuesday at the Beloit Public Library, Garrison said the district balanced its budget, overcoming a $10 million deficit. It reconfigured the school to a more traditional grade school — middle school — high school makeup. It closed two buildings, and it made a slight gain in student enrollment after years of enrollment decline.
Only 15 high school bands were chosen for the competition and festival. Behrens, who has been band director since 2001, said this is the 12th year that a jazz band from Beloit has been selected to attend the competition.
Beloit Memorial’s boys hockey team outscored Marquette 4-1 in the second period on its way to a 7-4 victory in its WIAA regional opener at Eble Ice Arena Tuesday night.
Amare Hereford and Brock Hodges put on a shooting clinic in the first half Tuesday night at the Barkin Arena, combining for 29 of Beloit Memorial’s 52 points.
