Beloit Memorial Wins for the First Time in Southern Lakes Conference with Five-Set Thriller Against Elkhorn

When Beloit Memorial joined the Southern Lakes Conference, the girls volleyball team surely felt like they had the short end of the stick entering one of the best conferences in Wisconsin.

The SLC proved to be as advertised when the Purple Knights went winless last season, their first one in the new conference.

But on Tuesday night, Beloit finally broke through by battling intensely with Elkhorn before coming out on top in five sets 19-25, 25-21, 15-25, 25-17, 17-15.

"This is huge," head coach Kim Gamble said. "Elkhorn is a good team and the girls played so tough."

Essence Coleman was dominant as ever from the net as she racked up 18 kills and six blocks. Setter Beyonca Hereford-Foster recorded 30 assists while fellow setter Rilynne Cleland had a team-high seven aces.

Junior libero Jenny Murillo did an admirable job patrolling the back row as she recorded 15 digs to help silence the Elks' defense late in the match.

The Purple Knights improve to 10-19 overall and 1-5 in the SLC.
