Beloit Memorial boys hockey team picks up pair of wins on home ice
BELOIT — Beloit Memorial’s boys hockey team had a terrific opening weekend at Edwards Ice Arena.
After dropping their opener 11-0 on the road against Sun Prairie, the Purple Knights posted a pair of victories on home ice. Jaxon Walenga’s hat trick powered them to a 5-0 victory over Stoughton on Friday. Sunday, four different Knights scored in a 5-3 victory over Monroe.
The Knights led Monroe 3-2 heading to the third period after goals by Graham Ingle, Walenga and Drake Juhl.
Monroe tied the contest on a goal at 1:28 of the third period off the stick of Brody Koehn. The Knights didn’t wait long to answer. Boston Lake scored an unassisted goal at 3:15 to put Beloit on top to stay.
Juhl added his second goal of the game at 15:14 off assists by Ingle and Marcus Allen. Juhl also had a pair of assists while Allen had four in the game, which saw Beloit score three times on power plays. The Knights had just one penalty and it came in the third period.
“We had quite a few penalties on Friday in a different kind of game,” Beloit head coach James Hoey said. “After that I asked them whether they would rather be on a power play or a penalty kill. I think they answered that pretty well.”
Beloit had six power-play goals, three in each game.
“Marcus Allen is the engine who drives this team and he had four assists (Sunday),” Hoey said. “He’s working real well with Graham Ingle on our top line. Drake Juhl also had a great game with two goals and two assists.”
Goalie Jordan Jerome had 24 saves while Brock Brandli kept Monroe in the game with 34.
Friday, the Knights took a 2-0 lead in the first period. Ingle scored first on a power play off assists by Allen and Juhl just over two minutes into the game. Walenga made it 2-0 at 16:08 off assists by Juhl and Ingle.
Walenga scored the only goal of the second period off assists by sophomores Jacob Crosby and Joey Donato.
The Knights, who didn’t have a penalty in the second period, had four in the third period, but still outscored Stoughton 2-0. Mason Terry scored on assists by Walenga and Rodrigo Delgado and Walenga got his third goal off assists from Juhl and Allen.
Jerome posted a shutout with 21 saves. Stoughton’s Maddox Woods had 46 saves.
