Fastbreak: Beloit Memorial Grad Shelvin Garrett II Wins Triple Jump at WIAC Championship

UW-Whitewater junior Shelvin Garrett II continued his dominant season with yet another performance that proved to be high and above the rest of the competition.

Garrett, a graduate of Beloit Memorial, helped the Warhawks men’s track and field team place fourth at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by UW-Platteville on Saturday.

Garrett took first place in his signature event, the triple jump, with a mark of 15.17 meters (49-feet, 9.25-inches), which was four inches better than the second-place finisher. He also was 13th in the long jump (6.75m, 22-1.75).

UW-Whitewater scored 102 points to finish behind first-place La Crosse (236), Oshkosh (166) and Eau Claire (120.5).

Kobe Chandler, another Purple Knights’ alum, was sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.03 seconds. He also ran a leg of the eighth-place 4x400 relay (3:22.14) with Brad Heller, Jonathan Weah and Darin Laux.

The Warhawks will next have a pair of “last chance meets” on May 10 and May 16 to better qualifying marks before heading to the NCAA DIII Outdoor Championships May 23-25 in Myrtle Beach.
