7th Grade ADV - Math

The School District of Beloit selected a high-quality math curriculum aligned to WI state standards that incorporates research-based instructional strategies to support all students in their mathematical learning. The goal of the math program is to prepare our students for their future, which could be very different from the world we live in today. As a result, we make an effort to establish a solid foundation in problem solving, conceptual comprehension, procedural fluency, and applying math to real-world situations. At all grade-levels, lessons build on a student’s prior math knowledge to help prepare them for future math learning.


7th Grade ADV Units


By the end of 7th Grade, students will...

  • use directed line segments to model integer addition expressions on a number line.
  • apply decomposition, properties of operations, and patterns to evaluate addition expressions involving rational numbers.
  • identify patterns and use properties of operations to make sense of rational number multiplication.
  • use a digital interactive to refine the interval to consecutive tenths, hundredths, and thousandths to increase the precision of their approximation.
  • apply the properties and definitions of exponents to efficiently operate with numbers in scientific notation to solve real-world problems, including by choosing appropriate units of measurement.
  • use angle relationships to write and solve equations to determine unknown angle measures.
  • engage in historical mathematics to determine the advantages and disadvantages of presenting problems rhetorically and symbolically.
  • develop an understanding of percents as a rate per 100.
  • make connections among the different representations of proportional relationships to compare them.
  • solve percent problems in a variety of contexts, including commissions, fees, discounts, markups, taxes, tips, simple interest, percent increase, percent decrease, and percent error.
  • explore the relationship between the circumference and the area of a circle, and they use formulas for the circumference and area of a circle to solve problems.
  • use angle relationships to determine the sum of the interior angle measures of a triangle and the relationship between the measures of an exterior angle of a triangle and the remote interior angles.
  • extend their understanding of proportional relationships to explore scale drawings.
  • find images of figures under dilations by using a variety of tools, including transparencies, rulers, lined paper, and the coordinate plane.
  • compare the areas of figures and the areas of their scale drawings and discover that the areas are related by the square of the scale factor.
  • discover that two values, which can be written as an ordered pair, represent a solution to a linear equation in two variables.
  • develop the formula to find the slope of a line.
  • utilize their understanding of similar triangles and the slope of a line to develop the slope-intercept form and the point-slope form of a linear equation.
  • graph proportional relationships and use unit rates to compare the steepness of lines representing proportional relationships.
  • develop the volume formulas for pyramids, cylinders, cones, and spheres by making predictions after watching videos and interacting with digital activities.
  • recognize the relationship between the volume of a prism and the volume of a pyramid and the relationship between the volume of a cylinder and the volume of a cone.
  • find the rate of change on different intervals and determine that if the rate of change is the same on every interval of a function, then the function is a linear function.
  • determine the surface areas of right prisms, right pyramids, and solids composed of right prisms and pyramids.
  • learn to interpret the probability of an event as the fraction of the time that the event will occur when a chance experiment is repeated many times.
  • learn the importance of random sampling when using sample statistics to estimate population characteristics.
  • learn how to estimate a population proportion by using categorical data from a random sample.
  • use random samples generated with a random number table to estimate a population mean by using numerical data.
