How do I make an appointment to see my counselor or the social worker or psychologist?
   
The easiest way to get an appointment is to sign up on their door or window.  You can also leave a voice mail message or email them.

Where do I go to talk to someone about a personal problem?
There are many people at BMHS that can help you.  They include, but are not limited to:

Teachers                      coaches                        Principals
Counselors                   social worker                school psychologist
Nurse                           Aides                           Support staff

The easiest way is just to approach one of these people and say “Can I talk to you?”
You can make an appointment to see your counselor, the social worker, or the psychologist by signing the list on their door, leaving a voice mail for them, or emailing them.

How do I check out to go home if I get sick in school?

Ask your teacher for a pass to the nurses’ office.  The nurse will make a contact for you and issue a permit to leave school.  The nurses’ offices are located in D111.

How can I get homework if I’m out sick?
There are several ways to get your homework.

  1. Ask a friend to walk around and collect it.
  2. Call the Guidance office 361-3029 if you will be out several days.  We need 24 hours to collect your work for you. Remember to have someone pick it up.
  3. Call or email the teachers and ask for it

How can I get help with my homework?
         
You teacher is here until at least 4:00 daily and often available before school and during
             lunch periods to provide free tutoring.
          If you belong to a pre-collegiate program, ask those advisors for help.
          Tutoring is offered by National Honor Society members.  See Mrs. Harding (B110) or
             Mr. Pickart (C102).

How can I make up credit if I am behind?
   
You can carry 8.0 credits for each year you have left in school and pass all classes; you can attend summer school (There is a cost from $75 -- $250 ), or you can take a correspondence or on-line course (prices vary) if you need to make up credit. You may need pre-approval so you should see your counselor first.

How do I change my schedule?
1.  Get an appointment to see your counselor ASAP.
2.  You can only change your schedule before the term begins unless you are misplaced, do not have the pre-requisite, or you have an IEP change.  
3. You can not drop a class to be a teacher's assistant or office helper.
4. Dropping a class after the first 10 days will result in an F being placed on your transcript for that class.

How do I join a club or other after school activity?
   
Follow the directions you hear on the morning announcements, check out “Knight Life” – a guide to school activities, or ask your counselor or any teacher how to contact the advisor or coach.

How do I ask for a Peer Mediation?
   
There are three ways to get a Peer Mediation: 1. Ask your counselor to help; 2. Fill out the form found in the main office; 3. Leave a note for Mrs. Harding in the main office (B110).

How can I get into Pathways, the alternative school at the Kolak Educational Center?
   
To apply to be considered for Pathways, you get the application in the main office, fill it out and return it to the main office.  There is a waiting list.  Each person is interviewed and considered individually to determine if Pathways is the best option for that person. Students enter the program only at the beginning of a term.

How do I sign up for free or reduced lunch?
   
Pick up an application in the main office, have your parent(s) fill it out, and return it to the main office.  You will get a letter when you have been approved.  You use your ID as your “meal ticket”.

How do I get a parking permit?
   
Pick up an application from Mrs. Riese in B107, fill it out, and return it.
There is a $60.00 per year fee.
Seniors gets first priority.  You need good attendance to get and keep the parking permit.

How do I get a work permit?
   
Pick up an application I the main office B110. When you return the completed application you need to bring $5.00, your birth certificate, your social security card.  Return it to the receptionist in the Main office.

When can I use the elevator?
   
You can only use the elevator is you have a pass form the nurse. She may require a note from your doctor.  See her before school.

How do I get a college application?
   
If you have internet access you can log on to the college website directly or get there from hereYou can down load applications or apply on –line.  It is important to complete all steps when applying on-line or your application may not go through.  This often includes printing out a “counselors” page.

If you want a hard copy application:

  1. The Guidance Office has all UW and Wisconsin Technical College applications.
  2. The Guidance Office has many Wisconsin and National Private college applications also, See your counselor.
  3. You can write, phone, or email your request to have an application mailed to your home.

 How do I apply for financial aide to go to a technical school or college?
    The Guidance Office has both the FAFSA application and the on-line worksheet.  Stop in to pick one or the other up.  The government prefers that you apply on-line if possible.
    You must be accepted by a college or tech school to get financial aide. You can apply to the school and for aide simultaneously.

 How do I figure out how much college will cost?
   
Each college’s web page has a link to their costs.  Your counselor can also help you get this information.  Also, you can always phone or email the admissions office at a college or tech school. This link will take you to the Guidance page where you can link to colleges.

How do I apply for scholarships?
There are many ways to get information about scholarships.

You can check out the information at this link; ask your employer and your parent’s employers, the organizations to which you and your parents belong, contact the financial aid office at the school you wish to attend, and check the scholarship list regularly.

 Applications for local scholarship are in the scholarship file in the guidance office. Stop in at your convenience, and pick up the applications you want. Fill them out and mail them as directed. Watch the deadlines!

How will I sign up for the classes I need to take in college or a technical school?
Most campuses have some type of freshman orientation.  Go to the earliest one offered.  You will be assigned an advisor who will talk with you about your major, give you information on what classes you’ll need to take over the next few years, and help you register the first time.

Where can I get help with studying for the ACT or PSAT tests?
In addition to the link above, you can take a class at UW Rock County that if offered several times a year.  Call 758-6523 or see your counselor for information.  You can take an on-line course through BYU. Our IMC has many study resources including videos, books, CD’s, and flash cards to help your prepare.

Where can I find out about getting a job?
Finding work takes persistence.  Look in the want ads; apply everywhere in person; tells all your friends and family that you are looking.  Many students advertise their services on Laundromat and grocery store bulletin boards. The Job Center in Janesville is a place where you can register for work also.
