School District of Beloit
Board of Education Policy #311

Principles of competent teaching shall be reflected by all staff and support the School District of Beloit philosophy to provide an environment in which each child's needs can be met to ensure maximum student achievement. Among these principles are the following:
  1. The professional educator understands and applies the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he/she teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for students.
  2. The professional educator understands how children learn and develop and will provide learning opportunities that support their intellectual, social, and personal development.
  3. The professional educator understands how students differ in their approaches to learning and creates instructional opportunities that are adapted to learners with diverse needs.
  4. The professional educator understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage students' development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.
  5. The professional educator has an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.
  6. The professional educator has knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.
  7. The professional educator plans instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, the community, and curriculum goals.
  8. The professional educator understands and has formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social, and physical development of the learner.
  9. The professional educator is a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (students, parents, and other professionals in the learning community), constantly reviews his/her own performance, actively seeks input from others (parents, professional educators, principals), and actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally. Professional growth is a critical factor to success for professional educators and the School District of Beloit.
  10. The professional educator fosters relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support students' learning and well-being and is an active participant in the community of Beloit.
