School District of Beloit History of Beloit Schools Burdge Elementary: -Built in 1917 (rebuilt in 1978). -Location: 321 Olympian Blvd. -Nicknamed "Burdge Badgers" -Named after Richard J. Burdge, prominent Beloit attorney, he was a school board member for 20 years, mayor, Wisconsin legislator, and a director of Beloit Iron Works. Converse Elementary: -Built in 1951 (addition in 1960) -Location: 1602 Townline Ave. -Nicknamed "Converse Cougars" -Named after Frank E. Converse, principal of high school 1897-1903, superintendent of schools 1898-1932. Cunningham Elementary: -Built in 1927 (additions in 1944, 1949, and 1960) -Location: 910 Townline Ave. -Nicknamed "Cunningham Comets" -Named after Lawrence Cunningham. He was active in the city, education, and business development (he founded Cunningham Brothers Construction Company) school board member, mayor, and state legislator.
Gaston Elementary:-Built in 1902 (additions in 1956, and rebuilt in 1976) -Location: 610 McKinley Ave. -Nicknamed "Gaston Bandits" -Named after Nathan B. Gaston, a Beloit manufacturing pioneer. He directed the first manufacturing plant in Beloit.
Hackett Elementary: -Built in 1895 (additions in 1958, 1965, rebuilt in 1967) -Location: 533 W. Grand Ave. -Nicknamed "Hackett Hawks" -Named after John Hackett; a prosperous grocer, one of the first residents and educators of Beloit, postmaster, mayor, and Rock County legislator.
McLenegan Elementary:-Built in 1965 -Location: 2639 Sunshine Ln. -Nicknamed "McLenegan Mustangs" -Named after Annie Susan McLenegan; Born in Turtle Township in 1875. Daughter of Henry Hall McLenegan. Attended Strong Elementary and Beloit Memorial High School. Graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1897. Returned to Beloit to teach history, English, and develop the high school orchestra at Beloit Memorial High School. Her publications included, “Centennial History of the Town of Turtle. Merrill Elementary:-Built in 1908 (additions in 1966 and rebuilt in 1978) -Location: 1333 Copeland Ave. -Nicknamed "Merrill Tigers" -Named after S.T. Merrill. Beloit College professor, businessman, manufacturer, superintendent of schools, bank president, and legislator. He built the first paper mill on the Rock River.
Morgan Elementary:-Built in 1954 as a county school (additions 1951 and 1960) Joined the city school district in 1963 (additions in 1966 and 1976) -Location: 1811 Lee Lane -Nicknamed "Morgan Stars" -Named after Hiram Morgan, large property owner in the city of Beloit, owned the area of land where the school is located.
Robinson Elementary:-Built in 1955 (additions in 1962) -Location: 1801 Cranston Rd. -Nicknamed "Robinson Cougars" -Named after Col. Robert P. Robinson. He taught high school in Beloit. He was a state senator from Rock County and was on the educational committee for the Wisconsin legislature.
Royce Elementary:-Built in 1898 (additions in 1958, 1967, Rebuilt in 1976) -Location: 825 Liberty Ave. -Nicknamed "Royce Roadrunners" -Named after Reverend Fayette Royce, director of the Episcopal Church, school board member, superintendent of schools from 1874-1875 (noted as a public speaker).
Todd Elementary:-Built in 1927 (additions in 1964) -Location: 1621 Oakwood Ave. -Nicknamed "Todd Timberwolves" -Named after Samuel J. Todd, , mayor, state senator, school board member, and Beloit city attorney.
Wright Elementary:-Built in 1890 (additions in 1956, rebuilt in 1964) -Location: 1033 Woodward Ave. -Nicknamed "Wright Tigers" -Named after Theodore Lyman Wright Sr., served on Beloit College faculty for over 40 years. He was superintendent of schools from 1870-1874, member of the school board from 1875-1880. He helped start the east and west side school districts and the first high school in the city of Beloit.
Aldrich Junior High:-Built in 1961 (additions in 1970) -Location: 1859 Northgate Dr. -Nicknamed "Aldrich Warriors" -Named after Alonzo Aldrich. President and one of the founders of Beloit Iron Works 1889.
McNeel Junior High:-Built in 1963 as an elementary school. Closed in 1982 and expanded with additions in 1984 to a middle school dedicated September 1985. -Location: 1524 Frederick St. -Nicknamed "McNeel Lancers" -Named after James H. McNeel. Principal at Beloit Memorial High School for 33 years (1913-1946).
Beloit Memorial High School:-Built in 1867. Opened in July of 1868. Originally located at 220 W. Grand Ave. Closed at that location in 1951. -Rebuilt and relocated in 1950 at 1225 Fourth St. (Additions in 1993-1995). -Nicknamed "Beloit Purple Knights" -Dedicated to the veterans of WWII.
Beloit Schools Closed
Parker Elementary: -Built in 1855. Closed in 1967. -Location: 840 Fifth St. -Named for Charles H. Parker; Beloit manufacturer, banker, legislator, 4 time mayor and alderman for 25 years in Beloit, and school board member.
Strong Elementary:-Built in 1851. Closed in 1964. -Location: 435 Park Ave. -Named after the Strong family, but particularly for Dr. H.P. Strong; a prominent Beloit physician, school board member, Beloit city clerk, and alderman.
Waterman Elementary:-Built in 1919. Closed in 1981. -Location: 1902 Church St. -Named after A.P. Waterman. A trustee and treasurer of Beloit College, mayor of Beloit from 1857-1859.
Lincoln Junior High:-Built in 1921. Closed in 1985. -Organized as a junior high grades 7, 8, and 9. -Location: 845 Hackett St. -Named after our Nation’s heroes.
Roosevelt Junior High:-Built in 1921. Organized as a junior high grades 7, 8, and 9 -Location: 1633 Keeler Ave. -Closed in 1980. Renovated and opened as the administrative center in 1982. -Renamed the Kolak Center after George Kolak, longtime Beloit educator and principal of Merrill Elementary School 1982-1991.
